Update from NSU President Dr. Chris Maggio, Friday, May 1, 2020:
It is hard to believe that April is over, and our virtual spring commencement program is one week away. Generally during this time of year we would be enjoying award banquets, end-of-semester events and recognition ceremonies. Instead, we are planning and preparing for a safe return to our campus.
We had hoped that the state’s improving COVID-19 statistics would allow for a phased opening of the campus to begin on May 4. However, to comply with the Governor’s continuation of the stay-at-home order until May 15 (see below), we will delay the phased reopening of campus for our faculty and staff. Students will return at a later date to be determined.
We have been preparing campus for reentry and are continuing to work with our custodial services to ensure proper cleaning. We have increased the number of hand sanitizer stations in buildings and we also have on hand a large supply of hand sanitizer to refill office hand sanitizer bottles. Further directions will be given soon for refill requests.
Also, upon return we will expect all employees and students to adhere to social distancing guidelines and wear a mask in the presence of others while on campus. Many faculty and staff members have personal masks, but please know that we have purchased disposable masks and should you need a mask, please contact Jennifer Kelly at andersonje@nsula.edu.
Please know that the health and safety of the Northwestern family is paramount. We have a responsibility and commitment to act in the best interest of all members of the NSU family. Our phased return to campus will be in accordance with federal, state and local health guidelines. More importantly, our phased return will be completed with a continued, considerate and sensitive approach to your wellbeing.
I recognize that many of you are parents of young children, and that the childcare network you depend on has been disrupted: K-12 schools and daycares are closed, summer camps are cancelled, and at-risk grandparents are unable to lend a helping hand. We will work through this together.
We will be providing more detailed guidance on our phased-in opening in the coming days. I hope that you have a great weekend and I look forward to having you all back on campus soon.
