This tutorial is a learning tool designed to equip faculty and staff with a better understanding of the confidentiality protections that the federal law affords the records that the University maintains about students. Maintaining confidentiality of student records is everyone’s responsibility whether you are faculty, staff, or student.
The objective of this tutorial is to provide guidelines for appropriately using and releasing students’ education records and to enable you to feel comfortable performing your job while respecting students’ rights to privacy of their records. This will allow you and the University to be in compliance with FERPA.
The tutorial only addresses the essential elements of the law, and it is not intended to be a substitute for legal advice. Specific questions regarding FERPA should be directed to the University Registrar’s Office.
Once you have finished the tutorial, it will create a record that you have indeed completed it.
