NATCHITOCHES – The Creole Heritage Center at Northwestern State University invites the public to attend two events this October as it celebrates its 25th anniversary and continues to recognize Louisiana Creoles and their contributions to communities, the nation and the world.
From 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, the Center will mark the 25th anniversary of opening its doors at NSU with its “Cheers to 25 Years!” Soirée in the Orville J. Hanchey Gallery on the campus of NSU (CAPA Annex – 140 Central Ave). A presentation honoring the founders and previous leadership of the Center, recognizing the Center’s supporters and toasting to the Center’s future will happen at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $40 per adult, $20 per child (ages 5-18) and children under 5 are free. Tickets include admission and a variety of hors d’oeuvres, desserts and non-alcoholic drinks. A cash bar will also be available. Music will be provided by students from NSU’s Department of Music and the Center-sponsored art exhibition “Elemental Threads: Contemporary works by Angelbert Metoyer, Annie Moran, and Ayo Scott” will be open to enjoy. Tickets can be purchased at https://chc-kickoff.eventbrite.com or by calling the Center at (318) 357-6685.
The following morning, Friday, Oct. 13th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Center will hold an open house in Kyser Hall, Room 116/118 on NSU’s campus (165 Sam Sibley Dr.) to show off the beginnings of its new visitor experience. The Center has redesigned its main offices and exhibit space to better showcase its holdings that document Louisiana Creole heritage and the history of the Center.
Many of the photographs, posters, and other objects on display have not been publicly accessible for many years. Dr. Kent Peacock, director of the Center, hopes “they will bring up great memories and increase awareness of everything the Center has accomplished and the countless people who made these accomplishments happen over the past 25 years.” Information on the Center’s future exhibit and educational goals will also be available. This event is free and complimentary snacks and drinks will be provided.
The Creole Heritage Center at NSU has a mission to preserve, educate, and advocate the value and significance of the vibrant Louisiana Creole People and is part of NSU’s School of Social Sciences and Applied Programs.
