NATCHITOCHES – Faculty from Northwestern State University’s Department of Health and Human Performance attended the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE) conference, presenting research and earning accolades from colleagues. NAKHE’s mission is to foster leadership in kinesiology administration and policy related to teaching, scholarship and service in higher education. The conference theme was “Expanding Beyond Our Borders.”
Dr. Jackie Calhoun, assistant professor in HHP and program director for Health and Exercise Science, was named recipient of the 2024 Hally Poindexter Young Scholar Award. Her lecture, “Staying Afloat During Everyday Adversity: Exploring the Intra- and Inter-Personal Factors Related to Athletic Buoyancy,” will be published later this year in “Quest,” a leading journal for interdisciplinary scholarship in kinesiology in higher education. She also presented “Interviews with Male Coaches and Female Athletes: An Investigation of Gender in the Coach-Athlete Relationship.”
Dr. Haley Blount, assistant professor, was presented the 2024 Presidential Award for Exceptional Contributions to NAKHE for her work with the marketing and social media committee. Blount, along with HHP Department Head Dr. Tara Tietjen-Smith, presented their research on “Toxic Leadership in Intercollegiate Athletics: Implications for Kinesiology,“ one of the top-attended sessions of the conference. Their research was funded through a Hellison Grant provided by NAKHE in 2022.
Assistant Professors Dr. Sunggun Jeon and Dr. Erick Kigen presented “Effects of Short-term Exercise on Physical and Psychological Health in International Students.”
