NATCHITOCHES – The Hispanic Student Journalist Association at Northwestern State University has uploaded the latest edition of their podcast, “Latino Living.” Episode Three is titled, “La Hermana Mayor” (The Oldest Sister).

In Hispanic culture, the eldest sister serves many roles within the family. She is a third parent to younger siblings, translator (when needed) for parents who are still learning English and often holds a part time job to supplement the family income.  She is expected to carry on traditions from the home-country while helping the family adapt to life in the U.S., along with many other responsibilities. Being the eldest sister is a responsibility and an honor.

“Latino Living’s” hosts Naydu Daza Maya and Lia Portillo Cantarero speak with Roni Biscoe, NSU’s executive director of Institutional Effectiveness and Human Resources, not only about the life of an eldest sister but also professional qualities this group of Latinas brings to the workplace. Daza Maya and Portillo Cantarero also speak with Isabel Juarez Rubio, NSU junior Communication major, about the challenges of leaving home as the hermana mayor, when so many responsibilities are left behind.
