NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s Department of Social Work and the Louisiana Department of Public Health will host the in-person and virtual Spring Opioid Symposium on Maternal Health on Friday, April 26 at NSU. Lunch will be from 11:30 a.m.-noon with the program going from noon-3 p.m. The event is open to faculty, staff, students and the community. A free lunch will be provided by Louisiana Healthcare Connections.
The symposium offers no-cost CEU credits for social workers, nurses and EMS professionals.
About 7 percent of women reported using prescription opioid pain relievers during pregnancy, according to 2019 self-reported data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Participants will learn about the effects of opioid use disorder (OUD) on maternal health, including:
- Pregnancy and OUD
- Support through and after pregnancy
- Improving the health outcomes of women with OUD
- The legal and law enforcement side
- Northwest Louisiana’s Mobile Crisis Response
- Demonstration of Narcan administration
- One individual’s powerful recovery story
