NATCHITOCHES – Author and Northwestern State University alumna Susan Sands is releasing a series of Southern romantic novels this year with three set in the fictional town of Cypress Bayou, Louisiana, a thinly disguised stand-in for Natchitoches. The first of the Bayou books, “Home to Cypress Bayou” will be released May 31 followed by “Secrets in Cypress Bayou” on Aug. 16 and “A Bayou Christmas” on Nov. 1.
Sands graduated from NSU in 1989 and was in town during the filming of “Steel Magnolias,” which she remembers as an exciting time in Natchitoches’ history. She compares her stories as “Steel Magnolias-meets-Sweet Home Alabama.” She plans to visit Natchitoches this summer and host a book signing.
Meanwhile, Sands has been busy with other projects, set for release soon. She contributed a short story to be included in “Something Blue,” a collection of wedding-themed romantic comedies by a group of authors that will be available May 17, and expects to release “The Island of Summer Sunsets” on June 8.
Sands made her debut with her Alabama series in 2015, beginning with “Again, Alabama,” a Southern romantic women’s fiction novel, that was followed by “Love, Alabama” and “Forever, Alabama,” “Christmas, Alabama” and “Noel, Alabama: A Christmas Romance” (2020).
A native of Sabine Parish, Sands lives in Roswell, Georgia. She earned a degree in elementary education and is married to Douglas Sands, D.D.S., who graduated in 1989 from NSU’s Department of Physical Education.
Sands said her lifelong love of reading and growing up in a rural community fed her desire to try her hand at writing stories with rich with colorful characters in small town settings.
