NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University Professor of Bassoon and Director of Orchestral Activities Douglas Bakenhus will perform with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra Woodwinds on Sunday, May 5 at 3 p.m. at the LSUS Theater Auditorium.
The program “Woodwinds in 20th Century France,” is part of the 2023-24 Noel Foundation Inc. Chamber Music Series which brings together the talents of world-class guest artists and some of top Shreveport Symphony musicians in intimate musical settings. General admission seats for all Chamber Music Series concerts are free.
Bakenhus will be joined by Leslie Newman on flute, Theresa Bridges on oboe, Scot Humes on clarinet and Gay Grosz on piano. They will perform works by Poulenc, Bozza, Debussy and Saint-Seans.
Bakenhus has music degrees from the University of Texas at Austin (DMA, B.M.Ed), Texas A&M University-Commerce (M.M.), and he has completed additional graduate courses in conducting and bassoon-performance at the University of Michigan. Bakenhus studied conducting and baroque/classical performance practice with Ivars Taurin at the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute (2010 and 2015). He remains active on the bassoon, playing in several local orchestras including the Shreveport Symphony, The Baroque Artists of Shreveport, Marshall Symphony, South Arkansas Symphony and Texarkana Symphony. He regularly performs with period instrument ensembles including, the Austin Baroque Orchestra, Sonido Barroco in San Antonio, and has made appearances in Houston with Ars Lyrica, the Houston Bach Society and the Mercury Baroque Ensemble.
