NATCHITOCHES – Cellist Paul Christopher will present a recital on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. He will be assisted by Sally Horak on flute, Chialing Hsieh on harpsicord and Theresa Zale-Bridges on oboe. Admission is free and open to the public. The program will feature works by Carter, Corigliano and Hailstork.
Christopher is an associate professor of music theory and low strings at Northwestern State. He has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Colorado, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, and Panamá. He has also performed guest artist recitals in Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, and South Korea. He has presented and performed at conferences in Alabama, Louisiana, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Ohio. Christopher’s articles have been published in the Jacques Offenbach Society Newsletter, Strings, American String Teacher and Bass World.
Hailed as a “brilliant pianist” (Fanfare), Hsieh has performed recitals in Europe, Asia, and throughout the United States and has been a featured pianist on seven CD’s for the Centaur, Innova, Enharmonic, and Ballpark record labels. Hsieh is an associate professor of collaborative piano at Northwestern State, and has given masterclasses throughout the United States and abroad and served as a judge and adjudicator for competitions and events. She earned her M.M. and D.M.A. in piano performance at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music.
Bridges has been principal oboist of the Shreveport Symphony since 1988. She holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Northwestern University. She is also principal oboist for the Texarkana Symphony and the South Arkansas Symphony, and has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Chicago Symphony. She has appeared as a soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic, and the Shreveport, Longview and Texarkana symphonies. Bridges is active as a chamber musician, performing with the Baroque Artists of Shreveport and the Shreveport Symphony Woodwind Quintet.
Shortly after arriving in Shreveport in 1984, Horak began playing with the Shreveport Symphony in the third flute/piccolo position and served as the orchestra librarian. Prior to the 1989-90 symphony season she won the principal flute position with the SSO, appearing as a soloist several times, playing until her retirement in the spring of 2020. She was also principal flutist with the Longview, Marshall, South Arkansas, and Texarkana symphonies, and continues to play in Marshall and South Arkansas. Horak is also a member of the Baroque Artists of Shreveport, principal flute with Shreveport Summer Music Festival and has played in many musical productions in Shreveport at Marjorie Lyons Playhouse and Emmett Hook Center. She holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Flute Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Her orchestral career has taken her to the San Francisco Bay Area, Minneapolis, Guadalajara, Jalisco and Xalapa, Veracruz.
