NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University Theatre and Dance will perform the one-act absurdist comedy “The Bald Soprano” March 15-19 and 22-25 in Theatre West. The play begins at 7:30 p.m. on March 15-18 and 22-25. The March 19 performance will be a 2 p.m. matinee.
Tickets are $15 and $12 for senior citizens and children under 12. Northwestern State, Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts and BPCC@NSU students are admitted free with a current student I.D. “The Bald Soprano” by Eugene Ionesco delves into the absurd nature of language and meaning. At times unconventional, and maybe even bordering on the “bizarre,” the play centers on the home of the Smiths who are hosting a dinner party. When their guests arrive, communication breaks down and ultimately ends in humorous nonsensical banter.
“The Bald Soprano is one of the most produced plays in the world,” said Director Scott Burrell. “Its popularity rests in its message of the futility we humans share in trying to make sense out of the crazy world in which we exist.”
Burrell said the cast and designers “have had a wonderful time enjoying the freedom to ‘play’ and have been creative with their artistic choices.
“We hope our audience is going to have a great time and enjoy some good laughs,” said Burrell. “We also hope the audience will find our production rich in meaning, and hopefully, just below the surface of the laughs, discover some very poignant implications.”
The cast is Austin Anderson of New Orleans as Mr. Smith, Sarah Lord Holoubek of Shreveport as Mrs. Smith, Mallory Speir of Pineville as Mrs. Martin, Derek Walle of Prairieville as Mr. Martin, Angelina Wood of St. Rose as Mary and Maudiel Aguilar of Azacualpa, Honduras, as The Fire Captain
Cortelina Encalada of Terrytown is the stage manager and Christian Osborne of Plaquemine is assistant stage manager. Burrell and fellow faculty member Pedro Guevara are scenic designers. Naiomy Pérez Del Valle of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, is the lighting designer, Hunter Becton of West Monroe is costume designer and Jackson Holoubek of Shreveport is sound designer. Logan Dupuy of Prairieville is the dramaturg/dialect coach and faculty member Andrew Killion is projections designer.
