Bachelor of Science in Child and Family Studies (CFS)
NSU’s Child and Family Studies online program prepares students to work in a variety of fields that are focused on the lives of children, individuals, families, and communities. Formerly known as Family and Consumer Sciences, CFS courses emphasize child development, family systems theory, parenting, and includes coursework in consumer behavior, education, nutrition, psychology, and social work.
When declaring a CFS major with the Registrar’s Office (registrar@nsula.edu) students must include their choice of a concentration. CFS majors (137) choose from two concentrations,
- Consumer Services (CS – 137C) or
- Child Development and Family Relations (CDFR – 137E).

All CFS students, regardless of concentration, must complete CFS 4500, Internship in Child and Family Studies, their last semester of the program. This course requires on-the-job training in an agency that serves children and their families, such as a childcare facility, a school, non-profit entity, or public agency. Please review the course catalog and courses offered for more information.
Credit for CDA certification is possible, as is transfer of credit from most Louisiana community and technical colleges. As the university registrar is the only official entity that accepts the transfer of any previous credit, future students are encouraged to contact admissions (applications@nsula.edu) and submit all official transcripts to be reviewed for admittance to the university.
Although CFS majors are not seeking licensure for teacher certification, the completely online program serves as an avenue for those students to move directly to the online alternative certification program, which does prepare individuals for a license to teach.
