NATCHITOCHES – The NSU Horn Choir will present their fall concert on Wednesday, Nov.17 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. Those attending are asked to follow university regulations and to wear a mask at all times in the building. A livestream will be available at capa.nsula.edu/livestream.
The ensemble is comprised of 14 horn students, conducted by Professor of Horn Dr. Kristine Coreil. Audience members will be taken on a stylistic journey through many eras and regions. Selections will include Renaissance pieces “What Saith My Dainty Darling” and “Gavotte and Hornpipe.” The Baroque era will be represented by two movements of Georg Friedrich Handel’s “Water Music.” The piece “Harambee” is written in a call and response style typical of African choral music, and features student soloists Douglas Flores and Carley Johnson. American styles are utilized in the compositions of Lowell “Spike” Shaw with a jazz-inspired quintet, as well as hornist/composer Drew Phillips’ “Still Waters,” which is composed with a pandiatonic modern choral influence. American pop style is featured with “Lullabye” by Billy Joel, a sweet song he wrote to his daughter to sing her to sleep. This arrangement is written by Las Vegas show-style hornist Chris Castellanos. And, to wrap up the concert, the horn choir will be joined by percussionists on the Latin-infused “La Danza Bajo el Sol.”
