NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’ School of Creative and Performing Arts will present “Musica Variada,” the first recital of the Celebration of Diversity Recital Series, on Monday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Those attending are asked to follow university regulations and to wear a mask at all times in the building. A livestream will be available at capa.nsula.edu/livestream.
“Musica Variada” will feature voice works by 20th and 21st Century Iberian and Latin American Composers, ranging from the Mexican bolero to the Spanish zarzuela and Argentinian art song to Broadway hits. NSU Assistant Professor of Voice Robert E. Cardwell said this community of composers have long been an integral part of music history, but up until recently only a handful of their works have been considered as part of the standard repertoire for singers.
“In the last two decades, Spanish-language songs have begun to appear in recital and concert programs around the world, garnering a much-deserved broader audience,” said Cardwell.
The program will celebrate the beautifully diverse music of composers such as Maria Grever, Miguel Sandoval, Lin Manuel Miranda and Xavier Montsalvatge.
Performing in the recital are voice faculty members Marcy McKee, Terrie Sanders and Cardwell. The program will also feature several Northwestern State voice students including Jayvian Bush of Lafayette, Bethany Coleman of Shreveport, Joy Davis of Minden, Kylie Dornbush of Huntington Beach, California, Douglas Flores Reyes and Elvin Floylan of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Emily Saldivar and Angelica Saldivar of Brownsville, Texas, Dilen Smith of Pineville and Jaeli Williams of Alexandria.
NSU piano faculty Daniel Ley and Michael Rorex and piano student Mario Rolando Gomez Orellana of San Pedro Sula, Honduras will also be participating.
