NATCHITOCHES – An exhibit by Phyllis Lear, professor of art history at Northwestern State University will be on display at the Baton Rouge Gallery Center for Contemporary Art from June 4 – June 27. The title of the exhibition is “Woman’s Work: Quilted Yo-Yos.”
“My work encompasses who and what I come into contact with on a daily basis,” said Lear. “For me, art is everywhere. Any life experience can become a work of art. Most recently, I have begun to explore the fabric Yo-Yo (Suffolk Puff) as an art form. Traditionally used as a quilting technique, I have appropriated the Yo-Yo as a module for building fine art pieces.
Lear said she has been sewing since age eight — doing something her sisters, mother, grandmother and godmother did.
“I clearly remember my grandmother Lear hand-quilting in the middle of her tiny living room – the quilt taking up nearly all of the available space,” said Lear. “I continue to honor her and that tradition.”
The opening reception for the exhibition will be held June 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Lear will give a gallery talk Sunday, June 9 at 4 p.m. For more information visit batonrougegallery.org.
