Copyright and Fair Use

Copyright and fair use have long been components of researching, teaching, and publishing, whether in the college classroom or in scholarly publishing. COVID-19 generated new questions and concerns as faculty attempted to identify and use resources to provide meaningful education remotely. This workshop will address questions regarding what can and cannot be used in your online classes in terms of copyright/fair use.  You will learn about Creative Commons Licensing (CCL) and how it represents an alternative to traditional copyright. CCL offers an alternative option for disseminating and sharing scholarly information and knowledge – as well as teaching and learning resources – with greater freedom than traditional copyright while still operating within the copyright framework. You will learn the characteristics and pros/cons of copyright, fair use, and the six major types of CCL. After this workshop, you will feel more comfortable in choosing, using, and creating resources for your classroom while leveraging fair use and CCL, protecting both the university and yourself as well as your intellectual property rights. This workshop is being presented by Megan Lowe, Director of University Libraries.
