NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University Professor of Flute Dennette McDermott and Professor of Bassoon Douglas Bakenhus took part in a video recording concert with the Austin Baroque Orchestra that recently was posted online.
McDermott said the video was recorded instead of a live concert and involved only principal players of ten people. Those playing maintained a distance and with all safety measures possible under COVID-19 guidelines.
“I am proud of not only the quality of the playing which was done straight through with only a few repeats of movements, and after only two days of rehearsing together after more than six months of all of us not playing with anyone or with any ensemble,” said McDermott.

This Austin Baroque Orchestra is led by NSU alumnus Billy Traylor. It is in its 10th season of immersing its audiences in the sound world of the past by performing high-quality music from the 16th, 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries using replicas of period instruments and historically-informed performance techniques. The group performed at Northwestern State in the fall of 2018 performing an all French program.
