NATCHITOCHES – The Annual Native American Arts and Crafts Day will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the first floor of Kyser Hall on the Northwestern State University campus. Admission is free and open go the public. The event is held each year on the same day as the Natchitoches Christmas Festival.
The Arts and Crafts Day is back after a two-year hiatus due to COVID. Crafts people from throughout the region will display, demonstrate and sell their arts and crafts. Pine needle basketry, river cane basketry, cypress splint and oak basketry will be available along with wood carving, beadwork and other handmade items will be for sale.
Tribal artists are expected from the Coushatta Tribe, the Jena Band of Louisiana Choctaw, the United Houma Nation, the Alabama-Coushatta, The Tunica-Biloxi, the Nde Connechi and Choctaw-Apache. Other tribes are also welcome, according to NSU Professor of Anthropology Dr. Pete Gregory. Arts and Crafts Day is sponsored by the School of Social Sciences and Applied Programs, the American Indian Studies Program, the Williamson Museum and the Native American Student Association.
