NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University has named its student media leaders for the 2023-24 academic year.

Grace Jensen of Shreveport will be general manager of KNWD, the campus radio station. Haley Wiggins of Shreveport will be editor-in-chief of the Potpourri, the campus yearbook. Lia Portillo Cantarero of Galliano was named editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, The Current Sauce. Izzy Plauche of Zachary will be editor-in-chief of Argus, the university’s literary magazine.

Jensen has worked at KNWD since her freshman year. She was the station’s music director.

“I fell in love with multi-media journalism because of my involvement with the radio station,” said Jensen. “I am excited about being general manager. I plan to expand publicity for KNWD and get more involved with the student body.”

Wiggins is a sophomore communication major who has been on the yearbook staff for two years.

“I have learned so much through the positions I have held,” said Wiggins. “I love writing and photography and I have been able to contribute both to the Potpourri. I want next year’s book to be very student oriented so everyone on campus can feel like they played a part in the creation of the Potpourri. I have some very cool ideas about the theme of the book, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. I want to make next year’s book the best one yet.”

Cantarero is a junior communication major. She hopes to reintroduce advertising to the newspaper and make e-editions available.

“I also want to translate stories and editions in Spanish to provide potential Hispanic students with information for their parents and to help with recruiting efforts abroad,” said Cantarero. “I want to make The Current Sauce a student newspaper that serves the community and a place where students can feel that they are heard and that we can give them a voice. The Current Sauce is not for me. It is for the NSU community and for students to feel informed.”

Plauche is a junior English major with a creative writing concentration. She is a member of the Spirit of Northwestern and the Demon Writers Guild.

“I’m excited for this upcoming year,” said Plauche. “I’m working to start using our new website to begin accepting non-traditional submissions (short films, original music, digital art). I also look forward to working with KNWD to start an Argus Hour radio show to talk about some of the pieces we’ve published and loved.”
