NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State All-American rower Toni Dettinger continued her winning ways by capturing gold in the Women’s 1X category at the Lanier Sprints Regatta in Gainesville, Georgia. Dettinger’s win was one of several strong performances by Northwestern State’s crew.
The event was a pre-conference warm up race leading up to the conference regatta in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on April 15-16. Crews in attendance were Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Colby College, College of Charleston, Emory, High Point University, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wake Forest. The teams competed over the rowing venue for the 1996 Summer Olympics.
“It’s tough for the rowers, being non-scholarship, but they are still doing six workouts on their own on top of attending practice five times a week,” said NSU Crew Coach Dr. Jason Stelly. “In addition, they continue to work fundraisers and other events to raise money for their season. The results reflect all the work they have put in. I’m proud of them and what they’ve accomplished this season so far.”
In women’s varsity 4, Kirsten Knobloch, Tori Dettinger, Kennedie Stewart, Madison Szekely and Emmett Nobles (coxswain) won silver. In women’s varsity 8, Knobloch, Stewart, Coral Jeane, Dettinger, Szekely, Hannah Gurtner, Alondra Torres, Katriane Creel and Nobles (coxswain) won bronze.
The women’s novice 8 team of Qetuwrah Clay, Gurtner, Lauryn Brown, Jessica Parra, Yume Aoki, Creel, Torres, Carmen Morales and Hannah Gahagan (coxswain) finished third in an exhibition.
The men’s varsity 8 team of Stephen Juneau, Caleb Poor, James Prock, Tyler Wilson, Joshua Hensel, Thomas Schneider, Christopher Acker, Brody Garlington and Adriana Patton (coxswain) finished seventh. The men’s varsity 4 team of Juneau, Poor, Hensel, Schneider and Patton (coxswain) finished fifth.
