NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State University Jazz Orchestra will present a concert on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. A live stream of the concert will be available at capa.nsula.edu/livestream. Associate Professor of Music Galindo Rodriguez will conduct the orchestra. Ted Scott is the graduate assistant conductor.
The Jazz Orchestra will play “But Beautiful” by Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen and arranged by Lennie Niehaus with Colin Stevens of Alexandria on alto saxophone, “Tricotism” by Oscar Pettiford, arranged by John Fedchock and prepared by R. Duboff and J. Sultance featuring Jessica Dubose of Athens. Texas, and James Greer of Benton on trombone, Jonathan Chaparro Romero of Cartagena, Colombia, on bass and Covie Latham of Beckville, Texas, on drum set, “Body and Soul” by Johnny Green and arranged by John Bambridge with Daniel Scott of Benton on tenor saxophone and Mario Orellana of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on piano.
The Jazz Orchestra will also play “Tijuana Gift Shop” by Charles Mingus featuring Jarrett Thomisee of West Monroe on tenor saxophone, Scott on flute and Juan Arrietta of Cartegena, Colombia, and Ever Naum Galeas of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on trumpet, “Just a Pretty Little Thing” by Tom Kubis with Rodriguez on flugelhorn, Scott on tenor saxophone and Miguel Bustillo Aguero of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on vibraphone and “Chiapas” by Hank Levy featuring Latham, Aguero on gong and congas, Dubose, Stevens, Scott and Rafael Melgar Casares of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on electric bass.
University Jazz Orchestra members are chosen by annual audition based on sightreading new literature. The ensemble will finish its fall semester with nine performances at the annual Christmas Gala. During the spring semester it will collaborate with two internationally renowned guest artists, jazz trumpeter Carlos Ortiz, III, an alumnus of Northwestern State, and tenor saxophonist Adam Larson. The Jazz Orchestra plans to compete at the Loyola Jazz Festival in New Orleans in March.
