NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State University Jazz Orchestra will present a concert on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. A live stream of the concert will be available at nsula.edu/capa/capalivestream. Associate Professor of Music Galindo Rodriguez will conduct the orchestra. The concert will feature graduate student Daniel Scott of Benton on saxophone.
The concert will open with “Who Can I Turn to” by Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley and arranged by Tom Kubis with Daniel Scott and Tim Pursell on tenor saxophone. Scott will be featured on “Biwa Lake” by Victor Rendon, “Body and Soul” by J. Green and arranged by J. Bambridge and “Widow’s Walk” by R. Margitza and arranged by Dan Galey.
The Jazz Orchestra will also play “It’s Only a Paper Moon” by Billy Rose and arranged by Jerry Nowak featuring vocalist Candace Paul, “A Time for Love” by Johnny Mandel and arranged by Hank Levy featuring the trombone section, “Love for Sale” by Cole Porter and arranged by Pete Myers featuring Ever N. Galeas on trumpet, “Trinita” by Mark Taylor featuring Evelyn Gardner and Fredy Hernandez on flugelhorn, “Samba Dees Gotta Do It” by Tom Kubis featuring Dylan Peacock on trombone, Garrett Thomasee on baritone saxophone, Wolfgang A. Otero on trumpet and Layton Zeringue on guitar and “The Way You Look Tonight” by Dorothy Fields and arranged by Mike Tomaro featuring Rafael Melgar on drum set, Scott and Jarrett Thomasee on baritone saxophone.
Scott is a professional saxophonist and bandleader of The Daniel Scott Quartet which has performed in Louisiana and Texas. As a sideman, Scott has performed with groups including The Xperience, The King Creole Orchestra, The Bossier City Big Band, The Josh Love Band, The Taylormade Band, The Kingston Trio, The Shreveport Symphony, The Red River Wind Orchestra, Loose Association, LA Sweet Tea Band and BluVoodoo. As a studio musician, Scott has been featured with artists such as Dexter Duran and The Port City Sound and Dylan Brunson and the Village Rhythm Company. He was featured at the 2018 NYC Jazz festival held on the Apollo Stage, the Natchitoches Jazz festival, the Let the Good Times Roll Festival and Red River Revel.
Scott has been a member of NSU ensembles including the NSU Wind Symphony, NSU Wind Ensemble, The Spirit of Northwestern, NSU Jazz Combos and The NSU Jazz Orchestra. Scott graduated from Northwestern in 2022 with a bachelor’s in music education and will be completing a master’s degree in saxophone performance this semester.
