NATCHITOCHES – International trumpet artist, improviser and composer Kelly Rossum will perform with the Northwestern State University Jazz Orchestra on Monday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. A live stream will be available at capa.nsula.edu/livestream.

Rossum has performed everything from lead trumpet at New York’s famed Birdland jazz club to baroque trumpet in Bad Säckingen, Germany, and from improvised free jazz in Bangkok, Thailand, to traditional Son in Santiago de Cuba. 

His original compositions, incorporating improvisational and contemporary avant-garde techniques, have been commissioned, performed and recorded by individual artists and large organizations alike. He has provided original scores for both film and dance and has received support from the American Composers Forum and the Jerome Foundation. 

Rossum is associate professor of trumpet /composition at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. 

The program will include “Cherokee” by Ray Noble and arranged by Alan Baylock featuring Miguel Bustillo Aguero on vibes, Daniel Scott on tenor saxophone and the trumpet section, “On Purple Porpoise Parkway” by Tom Kubis with Aguero and Scott, “Caribe” by Michel Camilo featuring Mario Orellana and David Berrocal Barrios on piano, Ever Nauam Galleas, Juan Arrietta, Ivan Lorduy and Sadoc Silva on trumpet, Sebastian Osorio on baritone saxophone and Jessica Dubose on trombone. 

Rossum will play three of his original compositions, “The Return,” “May Babies,” and “Seduction” along with “Portrait of Louis Armstrong” by Duke Ellington.
