The NSU Opera Theatre will present a number of scenes from well-known operas in their fall performance on Oct. 25-26 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
“This semester we are doing something a little different,” said Marcy McKee, an assistant professor of voice and director of the Opera Theatre. “I had a couple of graduate students, upperclassmen and faculty that wanted the opportunity to direct, as well as many students who wanted to be in opera. It will be a good mix of tragedy and comedy along with shorter and longer scenes.”
The Opera Theatre will present scenes from “Amahl and the Night Visitors” by Menotti directed by Zachary Moreau of Marksville, “Carmen” by Bizet directed by Michelle Moline of Miami, “Così fan tutte” directed by Amanda Charles from Houston and “In the Heights” by Miranda directed by Aaron Rogers of Amarillo, Texas.
Guest faculty directors are Instructor of Voice D’nissa Hester, who will direct a scene from “Falsettos,” and Adjunct Instructor of Music-Voice Juliana Handy, who will direct a scene from “La Traviata.” McKee will direct scenes from “La Boheme” by Puccini, “I Capuletti e i Montecchi” by Bellini and “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss. There will also be a very short complete opera by Menotti called “The Telephone.”
“I have been to the rehearsals assisting the directors but I’m proud of the directors they have done a very good job being prepared,” said McKee.
