NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University All-American rower Victoria Dettinger will be participating in the 2022 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta on August 2-7 in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada.
Dettinger, a junior psychology major from Rochester, Minnesota, was selected based on her upcoming participation in the USRowing Marietta Training Center Development Camp in Marietta, Ohio.
The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta started in 1880 as the first championship for the newly formed Canadian Amateur Rowing Association and has been hosted at the same site since 1903.

“At the beginning of the summer I applied for several development camps as a way to further my rowing and get better and I was invited to participate in this one,” said Dettinger. “Most camps have some type of racing at the end and this one is going to the Canadian Henley.”

Dettinger will find out what events she will participate in after arriving at the camp.

Dettinger recently completed training at the USRowing High Performance Camp in Jacksonville, Florida, at the USRowing Summer National Championships.  She was part of the Women’s U23 8+ that won the national championship and was in the W2- with Allie Alton of the University of Texas that took the bronze medal.

According to Dettinger, the USRowing High Performance camp was three weeks of training followed by a week of racing at summer nationals in West Windsor, New Jersey.  Dettinger was a part of the women’s U23 camp which was made up of 12 rowers and one coxswain.

“During the first three weeks of training, we had two or three practices a day and got to row in almost every boat class,” said Dettinger.  “We focused a lot on technique and developing our skills in smaller boats as well a building up our athletic base on the erg.  We had incredible coaches throughout the month including former Olympians and national coaches.  At the end of our training, we got to take everything we learned and put it to practice at the USRowing Summer National Championships.”

Dettinger said she will be able to bring a lot of what she learned back to Northwestern to share with the NSU Crew.

“The coaching experience at this camp was unique because we were taught not only how to row better now but also how to evaluate our own rowing later on so we can continue to progress even in situations where we may not be able to be coached as closely,” she said. “We also learned different styles of training and rowing and how they each work in their own way.”
