NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State University Saxophone Ensemble will perform at the 2023 Biennial North American Saxophone Alliance Conference in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on Saturday, April 1.
According to Professor of Saxophone Dr. Paul Forsyth, the event draws participants from around the world. The Saxophone Ensemble will perform “Whatever the Case May Be” by Derek Brown, a piece NSU commissioned last year.
“Being invited to perform at a Biennial North American Saxophone Alliance Conference is a once in a lifetime opportunity for these students,” said Forsyth. “It shows the amount of commitment to the saxophone and hard work that these students have been exhibiting at NSU.”
Forsyth said the students will be able to see and hear some of the best saxophonists in North America perform and teach. But then, as performers, they can play for the same international audience.
“Throughout the conference, these students will be able to hear new music, learn new ways of playing and practicing the instrument, and have the opportunity to buy new cutting-edge equipment,” said Forsyth. “When I attended my first North American Saxophone Alliance conference, it was a very eye-opening experience, and I can’t wait for these students to have the same opportunity.”
Paul and Leah Forsyth, who make up The Three Reeds Duo, will perform twice at the conference. One performance will be the world premiere of their newest commission, which is “Steadfast” by Brown.
