NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University student Daynie Edwards has been named the National Baton Twirling Association 2024 College Miss Majorette of Louisiana.
Edwards, the feature twirler in the Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band, will represent Louisiana in the 77th Annual Miss Majorette of America Competition at the University of Notre Dame this summer. The event is part of America’s Youth on Parade that includes the annual National Majorette Contest and the annual Collegiate Championship Corps and Teams of America Championship bringing together the best baton twirlers, teams and corps in the world for a series of National and World Open Championship contests.
“Though I prefer football season, competitions are what make me a better twirler on the field,” said Edwards, a sophomore business administration major from Kilgore, Texas. “Entering competitions challenges me to do and learn more. It also motivates me to practice and improve my skills for the next performance season. It gives me opportunities to bring back titles for my university, which I’m glad to have been able to do this season.”
Edwards won three state championship placements in Advanced One, Two and Three Baton. She also promoted NSU and encouraged young twirlers to attend Young Performers Day.
“My parents introduced me to twirling at the age of five, and I have been twirling ever since,” said Edwards. “More than anything, I love bringing twirling to new places and people. I love the art of twirling and enjoy sharing it with others. I have brought twirling back to my former middle and high schools, and I hope to do the same at NSU.”
