NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern Theatre and Dance will perform “Doubt: A Parable” on March 11-15 and 17-20 in Theatre West. The play begins March 11-14 and 17-20 at 7:30 p.m. and March 15 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 and $12 for senior citizens and children under 12. NSU, Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts and BPCC@NSU students are admitted free with a current student I.D. Tickets are limited. For reservations, call (318) 357-4218.
The play deals with heavy subject matter and has some intense scenes in an intimate setting.
“What do you do when you’re not sure?” So asks Father Flynn, the progressive and beloved priest at the St. Nicholas Church School in the Bronx, in his sermon. It’s 1964, and things are changing, to the chagrin of rigid principal Sister Aloysius. However, when an unconscionable accusation is leveled against the Father, Sister Aloysius realizes that the only way to get justice is to create it herself. And as for the truth of the matter? As Father Flynn says, “Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty.” In stunning prose, John Patrick Shanley delves into the murky shadows of moral certainty, his characters always balancing on the thin line between truth and consequences. “Doubt: A Parable” is an exquisite, potent drama that will raise questions and answer none, leaving the audience to grapple with the discomfort of their uncertainties.
“This is a play the theatre program and I have wanted to do for quite some time,” said Director Scott Burrell. “Not only does the play present themes that are of timely subject matter, it also gives theatre students an opportunity to stage a work that is used a lot in the classroom setting. Many will already have knowledge of the script as it was also a movie that received great reviews. The cast and crew are excited to see what the audience reaction will be like to see it live.”
The cast is Dania Hunter of Leesville as Sister Aloysius, Kyle Munson of Prairieville as Father Flynn, Rochanee Myles of Monroe as Mrs. Muller and Sidney Gilder of Crowley as Sister James.
Myjoycia Cezar of Shreveport is stage manager and Grace Cummings of Monroe is assistant stage manager. Caitlin Foster of LaPlace is dramaturg and Jade Duthu of Marrero is vocal coach. Liam Gardner of Gonzales is assistant lighting designer and Serena Bonnette of Covington is costume designer.
