NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University will host Honors Week March 6-10 to celebrate the university’s honor societies, organizations that recognize student achievement in academics, research, leadership and service.
“NSU’s honor societies enrich campus life by improving student engagement, providing opportunities to participate in community impact projects and encouraging success inside and outside the classroom,” said Reatha Cox, Dean of Students and vice president for the Student Experience. “Participating in honor societies helps develop leadership skills and supports student retention.”
In addition to Blue Key, Purple Jackets, Order of Omega and Alpha Lambda Delta, most academic disciplines have individual honor societies for students within their academic areas that also recognize academic success and contributions to the department while encourage networking with alumni in the same field.
Honors Week will kick off Monday, March 6 with International Badge Day in which students are encouraged to wear their badges. At 7 p.m. students are invited to Trivia Night at Flying Heart Brewery for pizza and trivia. Tuesday’s event is an open mic night in the Student Union’s Lucile Hendrick Room at 7 p.m. Performances can be vocal, spoken word, dance, etc. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. Wednesday, March 8 will be feature Donuts with the Deans in the Student Union Lobby where students can chat with administrators from 8-11 a.m. A Celebrating Honors Reception, a formal mocktail party, will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 9 in Hanchey Gallery. “Students inducted into honor societies have proven their commitment to academics, service and leadership and often serve as role models and mentors for other students,” Cox said. “Honors Week is a way for NSU to recognize these groups for what they contribute to the university.”
