Designed by Samuel G. Wiener, the Municipal Auditorium is considered a definitive example of Art Deco brickwork in Louisiana. Built between 1926 and 1929, the Municipal Auditorium was home to the Louisiana Hayride from 1948 to 1960. Musicians like Hank Williams, Sr., and Elvis Presley got their early starts there. By the 1960s, it had become a popular venue to black musicians and entertainers like James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Jimi Hendrix. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
