St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was founded in 1865. The first church was a one-room frame building, which also served as the first school for African American children in Shreveport. Due to the low elevation of the original site, the surrounding neighborhood came to be called "St. Paul Bottoms" after the church. A new church was built on Caddo Street, where it remained from 1889 until 1926. The present building was built in the Gothic Revival style in 1926, and remains a spiritual and social center for the local community.
