Recreation Center/City Swimming Pool
In the 1950s, in response to demands of the African American citizens of Natchitoches for equitable facilities, the city placed a recreation center and swimming pool on Lee Street in the Jackson Square community. Later, the Natchitoches City Pool on Amulet became a favorite summer destination.
We had a recreation center over there …. We used to have dances, bands coming from Mississippi, Arkansas and all around … things were totally different. Of course you have dances now, you know, but not in the same sense that we had them.
