NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s Department of Military Science hosted the Demon Challenge for JROTC students from area high schools. The students participated in a series of physical and leadership activities modeled on the U.S. Army’s Ranger Challenge modified for high school students.

Organizers said the all-day 10-event competition included 15 teams from six high schools challenged in a series of academic, fitness, leadership and confidence-building tasks intended to inspire excellence in the JROTC cadets and encourage them to grow as citizens and as future leaders.

Participants represented JROTC programs from Natchitoches Central, Grant, North DeSoto and Leesville and AFJROTC programs from Red River and Haughton high schools participated.

“The objective is to highlight NSU ROTC and what the students could experience being part of the Demon Battalion, and also provide an opportunity to see the campus,” said Capt. Joseph Davis, assistant professor of Military Science. “As our first event is orienteering, they go to find locations all around campus, so they work on the skill of terrain association and get an informal tour of campus. The last time NSU ROTC hosted anything like this was 10 years ago.”
