NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics announces three upcoming events in which prospective students can explore career opportunities in STEM fields, meet faculty and fellow students and learn about degree programs.  The School of STEM includes the Department of Biology and Microbiology, the Department of Engineering Technology, the Division of Mathematics, the Department of Physical Science and the Department of Veterinary Technology.

STEM Day will take place from 8 a.m.-noon Friday, Sept. 29 for students in grades 9-12.  Students can choose to explore topics that most interest them by selecting tracks in biomedical/microbiology, natural science/ecology, veterinary science, chemistry and physics or mathematics/engineering.  Students will learn about degree programs and participate in hands-on demonstrations.

In celebration of October as National Manufacturing Month, the Department of Engineering Technology is organizing the 6th annual Engineering Technology Symposium.  This year’s theme is “Creative problem-solving.”

The event will be from 8 a.m.-noon Monday, October 23 in the Student Union Ballroom. Regional manufacturers will participate to offer information about their companies and relevant STEM career opportunities available.

The Department of Engineering Technology will host its Fall Robotics Competition and Smart Structures Show (RC&S3) Wednesday, Nov. 29. All middle schools within a 200-mile radius of Natchitoches are welcome to participate.

The competition will be from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. This year’s event will include a smart structure show to provide opportunities for high schools and other organizations that are involved in robotics-related projects to show their creativity at the event.

There is no registration fee for the competition or show, but participants must submit a letter of intent and a press/photo release form.
