NATCHITOCHES – Five Northwestern State University students represented the university at the

Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Society convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, March 19-22.

Jim Case of Woodstock, Georgia; Kiara Davis of Crowley, Angela Saldivar of Brownsville, Texas, Rebecca Smith of Leesville and Kaitlyn Williams of Quitman attended the conference, along with co-advisor Dr. Ereck Jarvis, associate professor of English and coordinator of graduate studies.

Williams, an English education major in the Louisiana Scholars’ College, presented on “Integrating Young Adult Literature in Middle and High School Classrooms” in the convention’s Research in the Round event. Williams generated questions and materials to prompt 10-minute discussions with six groups of fellow convention participants.

Case and Saldivar presented original research at the convention. Case’s paper, “Adah’s Language of Resistance in Body and Story: A Re-description of a Second-Class Citizen,” was developed in a Summer 2024 graduate course with Dr. Jarvis. Saldivar presented “Decentering Anthropocentrism: An Exploration of Animal and Disability Studies in Sewell’s Black Beauty,” a project initiated during a semester abroad in Canada at Brock University.

This annual convention brings together hundreds of members and advisors from around the United States and beyond to share experiences and expertise and to participate in the official proceedings of the Society.
