NATCHITOCHES –Northwestern State University alumni and long-time supporters David and Sherry Morgan recognized outstanding scholars from the Alpha Zeta chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and the Beta Omicron chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity during a scholarship awards program March 10.

Extra Mile Scholars are students who go the extra mile for their chapters, their campus and their community while pursing degrees. The Morgans also awarded First Generation Scholarships to students who are the first in their families to attend college.

David Morgan is a 1973 NSU graduate and past president of NSU’s Beta Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi.  He established the Extra Mile Scholarship in 2008 to recognize members of Pi Kappa Phi who distinguish themselves through academic success, chapter leadership, campus involvement and part-time employment. The scholarship has since grown and is awarded at the national level as well as in the local chapter.

The Sherry Fargerson Morgan “Extra Mile” Scholarship for Sigma Sigma Sigma was announced in 2017 and mirrors the criteria for Pi Kappa Phi by honoring students who are outstanding and high achieving members of the chapter.  Sherry Morgan is a 1973 graduate of NSU.

“The only way you are going to get anywhere is to go the extra mile,” David Morgan said. “Do more than what is expected.  Be an extra-achiever.  Be an overachiever.”

“It’s a blessing to us to come here,” Sherry Morgan said. “We look forward to seeing how you are going to pay it forward.”

Honored guests were NSU President James Genovese, Joyce O’Daniel, national president of Sigma Sigma Sigma; Pi Kappa Phi CEO Jake Henderson and NSU’s head football Coach Blaine McCorkle, who talked about building a culture of excellence by developing character, trust, unity, accountability and toughness.
