6. Calanthean Temple – 1000 block of Texas Avenue

The Court of Calanthe, an early African American women's association, had their building constructed at the juncture of Austin Place and Texas Street in 1923, near the heart of the Avenue business district. The building served as headquarters for the Court of Calanthe, and provided office space for African American professionals. The rooftop garden was the scene of dances, social activities, and Mardi Gras balls. Plans are underway to restore this beautiful, historical structure.
